The Virtual Book Launch of Karen Buhler-Wilkerson’s If you are like me, it is difficult to keep up with various meetings and deadlines during the pandemic. Often an important presentation or activity is missed because I simply overlooked it or was distracted by something trivial. It is with this in mind that I am writing today, because something important is happening on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 4:00 ET that I think, as members, you would want to know about or in some cases be gently reminded. For members of long standing, Dr. Karen Buhler-Wilkerson is a familiar name. For more recent members, her name may be new. I never had the honor of meeting her in person, but heard stories of her brilliance from faculty and former students at Penn. And so, on Thursday, The Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing is inviting us to a virtual book launch to celebrate the re-publication of Karen Buhler-Wilkerson’s False Dawn: The Rise and Decline of Public Health Nursing. Since its initial publication in 1989, Karen Buhler-Wilkerson’s False Dawn: The Rise and Decline of Public Health Nursing, remains the definitive work on the creation, work, successes, and failures of public health nursing in the United States. The forward is written by Susan Reverby and Julie Fairman. To register, please go to www.nursing.upenn.edu/falsedawn For more information, please click here. A copy of False Dawn can be ordered through Rutgers University Press; use code RFLR19 for 30% off and free shipping. https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/false-dawn/9781978808720 I have told the faculty at my university about the event and several of the public health faculty have ordered the book to use it for their classes. Of all of the ways to spend your afternoon, this event is important and I encourage you to attend. Many thanks for your support, Melissa |
