Supporting graduate students who need financial assistance to attend AAHN conferences.
The Brigid and Rusty Lusk Travel Award provides conference registration plus up to $1,600 in travel reimbursement to help graduate students attend AAHN conferences when institutional funding is not available.

Application Deadlines & Timeline
Apply by April 15, 2026. You may apply before knowing whether your paper or poster has been accepted.
Eligibility Requirements
- AAHN member
- Enrolled graduate student at the Masters or Doctoral Level (MA, MSN, PhD, DNP, EdD, etc.)
- Only one student per advisor can apply in each cycle
- Before applying, confirm that the advisor supports your application and will provide a reference letter.
- If multiple students want to apply, the advisor should select one candidate to apply.
- There is no requirement for an accepted conference submission (Paper, Poster, etc.) but acceptance may strengthen your application.
- A student may apply multiple times but may receive the award only once per graduate degree.
- e.g., If the student receives the award during the master’s program, the student may also receive it during the doctoral program.
- Three travel awards will be available each year.
How to Apply

- Basic information form
- Personal statement detailing the following in no more then 800 words:
- Why you want to attend the AAHN conference
- How attending will impact your research/studies
- Your current funding situation
- Letter of support from your advisor or program chair
What’s covered by the award
- Conference registration
- Travel and hotel reimbursement up to $1600
Method of reimbursement
- Before travel: Book flights/hotels/train and save all receipts
- After the conference: submit receipts to [email protected] within 30 days of the conclusion of the conference. Receipts are required for all expenses over $25.
- Student will receive reimbursement within 30 days of approval.
Application Timeline
- You may apply before acceptance notifications are released
- No deadline extensions or exceptions
- All applicants are notified (accepted or not) approximately one month after the deadline

Do I need an accepted paper to apply?
No. Acceptance is not required but may help.
How do I submit receipts?
Send all receipts to [email protected].
Can I book flights outside the conference dates?
Yes, as long as costs are comparable to standard conference travel dates.
Is travel insurance reimbursable?
No. Travel insurance is not reimbursable under AAHN policy.

Brigid Lusk (PhD RN) is a long time member of the AAHN and has served in a number of AAHN offices, including that of President. Her late husband, Ewing “Rusty” Lusk (PhD), although a computer scientist by trade, was also an ardent supporter of the AAHN and served on the AAHN Board.
