RESEARCH AWARDS

The American Association for the History of Nursing (AAHN) offers four awards for completed research, each presented annually at the Fall Nursing History Conference. The Teresa E. Christy Award is to acknowledge the excellence of historical research and writing done while the researcher was a doctoral student. Two of the AAHN awards recognize the work of experienced scholars in nursing history. The Lavinia L. Dock Award is presented to the author of a book noted for its outstanding research and writing. The Mary Adelaide Nutting Award is conferred on the author of a post-doctoral article in the history of nursing. The purpose of the Mary M. Roberts Award is to recognize outstanding original research and writing in an edited book of nursing history. Only AAHN members are eligible to apply for these awards.

All award submissions should be sent to AAHN headquarters, with attention made to the specific award for which you are submitting. All award submissions must be received by June 15, 2024.

TERESA E. CHRISTY AWARD
FOR EXEMPLARY HISTORICAL RESEARCH AND WRITING

The purpose of the Teresa E. Christy Award is to encourage new nursing history investigators, and to recognize excellence of historical research and writing done while the researcher was in a student status. The Christy Award is given for doctoral work; the submissions are usually dissertations. NOTE: Revised dissertations that result in published books are generally submitted for the Lavinia Dock Award.

New scholars are encouraged to submit manuscripts in English, that have been completed within the last three(3) years. Submissions should be sent electronically, but if you prefer to mail your submission, please include 3 bound copies. One submission per author, please.

Selection criteria for the award will be based on the rigor of the historical research and the quality of writing demonstrated in the manuscript. Submissions are not returned.

LAVINIA L. DOCK AWARD 
FOR EXEMPLARY HISTORICAL RESEARCH AND WRITING

The purpose of the Lavinia L. Dock Award is to recognize outstanding research and writing produced by an experienced scholar in nursing history who submits a book.

Scholars are encouraged to submit published books (3 copies) based on original historical research related to the history of nursing. The book must be in English, and must have been written within the last three (3) years. One submission per author, please. Selection criteria for the award are based on the rigor of the historical research and the quality of the writing demonstrated. Submissions are not returned.

MARY ADELAIDE NUTTING AWARD 
FOR EXEMPLARY HISTORICAL RESEARCH AND WRITING

The purpose of the Mary Adelaide Nutting Award is to recognize outstanding research and writing produced by an experienced scholar or student in nursing history who submits, most often, a post-doctoral research manuscript or article. Articles by pre-doctoral students should be submitted to the Christy Award.

Scholars are encouraged to submit manuscripts based on original historical research related to the history of nursing. Manuscripts may represent published or unpublished research, must be in English, and must have been written within the last three (3) years. One submission per author, please.

It is recommended that submissions be sent electronically. If you choose to submit printed manuscripts, please send 3 copies. Submissions are not returned.

Selection criteria for the award are based on the rigor of the historical research and the quality of the writing demonstrated in the manuscript.

Please note that 2006 was the first time the Nutting Award was awarded. Between 2001-2005 two Dock awards were given, one for book, one for manuscript

MARY M. ROBERTS AWARD
FOR EXEMPLARY HISTORICAL RESEARCH AND WRITING

The purpose of the Mary M. Roberts Award is to recognize outstanding original research and writing in an edited book of nursing history.

Editors are encouraged to submit published edited books (3 copies) based on original research related to the history of nursing.  Books must be in English and have been published in the last three (3) years.  One submission per editor, please.  Selection criteria for award are based on the rigor of the research and quality of the writing of the chapters.  Submissions are not returned.

All submissions for the Roberts Award should be sent to:
