Board Positions

President

Arlene W. Keeling, PhD, RN, FAAN

Centennial Distinguished Professor Emerita

University of Virginia

As a longtime member of AAHN, and a former AAHN President who initiated the research grants and the international meetings (first one in London in 2010), I would like to return to the board at a time when I feel the organization needs experienced leadership as we address a decrease in members and transition to this new management organization. As author, editor/co-editor of several books on nursing history, I am familiar with the broad scope of the profession's past, and am eager to share those findings with new members. My vision for the future includes an idea for expanding our research grants to experienced historians undertaking new projects, as funding for those is scarce.

Offices held previously in AAHN:

  • Secretary
  • President

Offices held in other nursing, health, or history organizations:

  • Co-chair of the Expert panel on nursing history and health policy, American Academy of Nursing
  • Director of the Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry, UVA

Shannon E. Perry, RN, PhD, FAAN

Professor Emerita

San Francisco State University

AAHN must move forward with our new management company and stabilize our bottom line. I would like to grow AAHN to include more members and more members who are not affiliated with universities. We need to find ways to reach out to potential members and contact nurses who are interested in history but not necessarily interested in doing historical research. We need to explore alternate sources of income, for example, we can mention estate planning when corresponding with members about renewing their membership. We must appreciate our members and seek out and welcome new members. We might target schools of nursing that are historic in their date of founding or in programs that have historical value to highlight in our publications and programs. Working together we can come up with plans to keep us vibrant and growing.

Kristin L. Kuhlmann, PhD, RN, FNP-BC

Nursing Program Director/Assistant Professor

Eastern New Mexico University

Studying the history of nursing during wars, plagues, and before an understanding of microbiology and asepsis is illuminating and humbling. It is looking, with admiration, at women and men courageously fighting the enemies of infection and disease throughout the ages and doing what nurses have always done- taking care of the patients’ needs, healing their minds, bodies, and spirits. We continue their journey and learn from their shared experiences.
