Edie West has been the recipient of the following grants
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing selected Drs. Arlene Keeling,
John Kirchgessner and Barbara Brodie to write a comprehensive history of the
organization, and its service to the profession. Dr. Keeling is the Principal Investigator
of the project which is scheduled for completion in time for the association’s 40th anniversary in 2009.
Sharon Hadenfeldt completed her PhD in December of 2006 at the University of Nebraska. Her dissertation was A Historical Study of Nurse Anesthesia Education in Nebraska.
Pat van Betten successfully prepared small grant requests for Sigma Theta Tau International to fund displays for the Nevada State Nurses' Association 75th Anniversary. Pat credits the Grant Writing Workshop held as the Pre-Conference in 2005, Atlanta.

The sponsoring institution is the University of Pennsylvania, Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing.
The grant, for $150,000, is a three year National Library of Medicine Scholarly Works in Biomedicine and Health grant and
will result in the creation and development of a website which will document and analyze nursing's most
compelling and controversial political and social issues and place them in their historical context.
The website will address in electronic format a wide range of issues critical to comprehending and broadening our
understanding of health care and nursing concerns. These include but are not limited to the role of professional nurses,
nurse shortages and workplace problems, access to care, advance nursing practice, racism, and public health issues.
The project represents an innovative, one of a kind, creative method of disseminating historical information and analysis
to a broad audience and promises to make a significant contribution to our knowledge base of nursing history and
its close connection to health care policy.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing will host a Historical
Tea on Saturday, June 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the Health Sciences Learning Center in
Madison, Wisconsin. The guest of honor will be Professor Emerita Signe Skott Cooper
('43 ZC, '48 BS), internationally recognized and greatly respected teacher and
nursing historian as well as curator of the School of Nursing's historical collection.
Proceeds from the event will go toward construction of a nursing sciences building on the
University of Wisconsin-Madison's health sciences campus. The building will be home to the
Signe Skott Cooper and Hilda Skott Historical Suite.
Nursing alumni and friends are invited to peruse historical exhibits at the
Health Sciences Learning Center before indulging in an assortment of teas,
celebratory champagne, finger sandwiches, and other hors I d oeuvres, followed by a
style show of historical nursing uniforms. Guests will also have the opportunity to view
one of the School's most recent acquisitions: a rare, 1860 edition of Florence
Nightingale's Notes on Nursing, the 136-page primer that served as a cornerstone for nursing
curricula.

We have a researcher trying to locate a portrait of Mrs. Coster [matron of St George's Hospital in London from 1872-1897] which has been described in the Nursing Record as being exhibited at the Chicago Columbian Exhibition of 1893. It was one of a collection of notable British nurses which hung in the British Nurses Section of the exhibition - organised by Ethel Bedford Fenwick. Joellen Hawkins, along with Lois Haggerty, have published Diversity in Health Care Research, Strategies for Multisite, Multidisciplinary and Multicultural Projects (Springer Publishing). Joellen Hawkins has also just published Guidelines for Nurse Practitioners in Gynecologic Settings (8th Ed. Springer Publishing). And Dr. Hawkins is editor of the new journal Clinical Excellence for Nurse Practitioners. The International Journal of NPACE.
Luther Christman and Imogene King were inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame.
Beth Norman was inducted into the [college wide] Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The Hall recognizes alumni who, through their superlative achievements in professional and civic life, have brought honor to themselves and to the university.
Cynthia A. Gurney, presented "Adaptation of Medical Personnel to Combat" to the Army Nurse Corps Association at their annual meeting in May.
Bob Welch was the speaker at the Nursing Archives Annual Meeting on April 21 at Boston University. Bob's book, American Nightingale: The story of Frances Slanger, Forgotten Heroine of Normandy, was published by Simon & Schuster.

Patricia van Betten and Melisa Moriarty published Nursing Illuminations A Book of Days (Mosby).
Tom Olson along with Eileen Walsh, published Handling the Sick: The Women of St. Luke's and the Nature of Nursing, 1892-1937 (Ohio State University Press).
Effie Graham, Jackie Pflaum, and Elfrida Nord, Editors published With a Dauntless Spirit: Alaska Nursing in the Dog-team Days . Effie Graham passed on last September.
Marjorie Lentz Porter and Barbra Mann Wall, are Editors of Advocacy and Action: 100 Years of the Indiana Nursing and the Indiana State Nurses' Association .
Lynn Houweling has a wonderful article "Image Function and Style. A history of the nursing uniform" in April American Journal of Nursing This article is also in the the catalog of RN: The Past, Present and Future of the Nurses' Uniform an exhibit from The Fabric Workshop and Museum. Susan Benedict was one of the keynote speakers
at Complicity and Compassion: The 1st International Conference on Nursing &
Midwifery in the Third Reich. The converence was held June 10-11 2004 at
Limerick, Ireland.
Susan Mayer presented two papers: The School that would not die: The Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in the Warsaw Ghetto.
and The Beneficence of Luba Bielicka-Blum.
Mary Lagerwey presented: Lessons to be learned.
Cynthia Toman received Ottawa University's 2003 Governor General's Gold Medal for outstanding thesis in the humanities.
Julie Fairman will present the Agnes Dillon Randolph Lection on March 23, 2004 at the University of Virginia.
Rebecca B. Harmon completed her doctoral dissertation "An Oral History of Psychiatric Nursing in a State Hospital, 1950-1965" at the University of Virginia[ 2003].
Laima Karosas has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation, ".The interrupted development of Lituanian nurses"., at the University of Connecticut.
Sioban Nelson has also received a Rockefeller Archive Center Grant Award for A Study of Nursing in China, 1900 - 1951.
Catherine J. Dodd, MS, RN, has been inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.
Florence Melchior is the 2002 winner of the CAHN/ACHN Dr. Margaret Allemang Scholarship in Nursing History. Her doctoral thesis, supervised by Geertje Boschma, is about student labour at two Alberta hospitals during the early 20th century.
John Parascandola received the 1st Sidney Edelstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the History of Chemistry. He is presenting a lecture on "Quarantining Prostitutes: VD Rapid Treatment Centers of WWII America" December 11 at the National Library of Medicine.
Arlene Keeling received a three year $150,000.00 grant (G13 - Publication grant) from the National Library of Medicine to research the "History of Nursing and Prescriptive Authority, 1900 to the present."

Commencing in 2004 one issue per year of Nursing
Inquiry will be devoted to
historical research, methodology and book reviews. Nursing Inquiry has
long been committed to publishing high quality historical research on
nursing. However, increasing demand for special issues on historical
research has led to this exciting new initiative. The first
history issue will be September 2004. Deadlines for manuscripts will be
31 January 2004 and they will go through the normal review process.

contributors.

John Erlen and Pat D'Antonio are seeking information about all the dissertations we left off the survey in Volume 12 of Nursing History Review. Please send information about addititional dissertations to John Erlen.
The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) is interested in occasionally publishing historic photographs of nurses and nursing accompanied by captions of 100-200 words that explain both the photograph and its relevance to current practice and/or policy issues. The photographs and captions will be peer reviewed. The photograph and caption can be based on previously published work, as long as the caption is presented in an abstracted summary of an original publication. The publication source must also be cited.
The editorial office of the Nursing History Review is currently coordinating the process of submitting photographsand abstracts/captions to the AJN. Please sent them following to the editorial office for each submission:
